Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure wherein a solution called a Sclerosant is injected into blood vessels or lymph vessels that cause them to shrink. It helps in reducing the small varicose veins, spider veins, cutaneous lymphangiomas, vascular malformations etc.
The sclerosant acts as an irritant to the targeted vessel wall, causing its damage and blood reroutes to healthier veins.
It is an outpatient procedure that lasts 30–45 minutes. During the procedure, a fine needle is used to inject the sclerosant solution into the varicose or spider vein. There may be a mild burning sensation for a few minutes during the treatment. Some bruising or marks at the site of the injection is known to happen.
After the treatment, the person needs to wear compression stockings to help with recovery and prevent further varicose veins from forming. Response to the treatment takes 3–6 weeks for spider veins, and 3–4 months for larger veins. In most cases, follow-up treatments are required to collapse a vein fully.
At FMS Skin and Hair Clinics, one can avail this facility by well-trained dermatologists. Your consultant dermatologist will first assess the skin over the affected area, examine the venous system, ask for a few preliminary tests and then the procedure will be undertaken.
The results of sclerotherapy are permanent, once the venous walls collapse and form a fibrous tract, no blood can pass through the vein.

No, sclerotherapy does not generally hurt. The slight needle prick is all you’ll feel during your treatment.
