Dandruff is a common scalp condition caused by a fungus (yeast) that is not contagious. It can be seen at any age but usually starts in adolescence. There are many predisposing factors such as the oily scalp, environmental factors, chronic conditions such as Parkinson’s disease etc. Symptoms are flaking on scalp, eyebrows, upper eyelids, beard, chest etc. Itching is also present in most of the cases.
Dandruff usually aggravates during cold, rainy season, stress, chemical styling products and in a few medical conditions.
Prevention is done by maintaining the scalp healthy and clean. Treatment is done by gentle cleansing of the scalp with medicated shampoo containing salicylic acid, ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione, selenium, etc. which is done twice-thrice weekly. If the dandruff is resistant, then systemic medication can be used.
