Blackheads, also known as OPEN COMEDONES, are the tiny dark spots that are often present as dots on our nose, chin and forehead. It is a very common skin concern which is both frustrating and stubborn to deal with. It gives the skin a very rough and gritty feeling. Despite their tiny size, blackheads have a significant impact on our skin’s appearance and our confidence.
What are Blackheads?
Blackheads or OPEN COMEDONES, are small, dark, gritty bumps which are formed on the skin’s surface. These are type of acne lesion that occurs when the hair follicles become clogged with excess sebum(oil), dirt and dead skin cells. Unlike whiteheads, which are closed comedones present with a white or flesh-coloured bump, blackheads have an open pore which allows the trapped debris to oxidize and turn dark when exposed to air. While blackheads can develop on any part of the body, they are most commonly found on the face, particularly in the T-zone area i.e., the forehead, the nose and the chin.
Causes of Blackheads:
Several factors contribute to the formation of blackheads which includes:
- Excess Sebum Production: Overactive sebaceous glands can lead to the overproduction of sebum, which can clog the hair follicles and contribute to the formation of blackheads.
- Buildup of Dead Skin Cells: The accumulation of dead skin cells on the skin’s surface can combine with sebum and dirt to block the pores, creating an ideal environment for blackheads to form.
- Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, such as those that occur during puberty, menstruation, or pregnancy, can increase sebum production and exacerbate blackhead formation.
- Certain Cosmetics and Skincare Products: Using comedogenic or pore-clogging products can contribute to the development of blackheads by further blocking the pores and trapping debris.
- Genetics: Some individuals may be genetically predisposed to having larger pores or producing more sebum, increasing their susceptibility to blackheads.
Treatments for Blackheads:
Usually blackheads are be stubborn, and are very difficult to treat. There are various effective treatment options available to help clear and prevent them. These treatment modalities target the underlying causes of blackheads and aim to unclog pores, reduce excess sebum production, and promote skin exfoliation. Here are some common treatment options for black heads:
AT HOME TREATMENT —
- Topical Retinoids: Topical retinoids, such as tretinoin, adapalene, and tazarotene, are derivatives of vitamin A that help promote cell turnover and prevent the formation of blackheads. They work by unclogging pores, reducing inflammation, and promoting the shedding of dead skin cells.
- Salicylic Acid: Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) which exfoliates the skin, penetrates the pores, and helps dissolve the debris trapped within them. It is effective in treating blackheads and preventing future breakouts by keeping the pores clear.
- Benzoyl Peroxide: Benzoyl peroxide is an antimicrobial agent that kills acne-causing bacteria and helps reduce inflammation. It is available in various strengths and formulations and can be used to treat blackheads as part of a comprehensive acne treatment regimen.
- Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs): Alpha hydroxy acids, such as glycolic acid and lactic acid, are chemical exfoliants that help remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and improve skin texture. They can be found in cleansers, toners, and exfoliating treatments.
- Prescription Medications: In cases of severe or persistent blackheads, a dermatologist may prescribe oral medications such as oral retinoids (e.g., isotretinoin) or oral contraceptives (for hormonal acne) to help control blackhead formation and acne breakouts.
AT CLINIC TREATMENTS:

While extraction can provide immediate relief from stubborn blackheads, it should be performed by a trained professional to avoid skin damage or scarring.

Most of the medifacials are based with glycolic acid, salicylic acid making them one of the easy wat to remove the comedones and simultaneously improve the skin texture. Various options available which include FIRE AND ICE FACIAL, OBAGI ACNE CONTROL FACIAL etc.
- Chemical Peels: Chemical peels involve the application of a chemical solution to the skin, which causes the top layers to peel off, revealing smoother, clearer skin underneath. Chemical peels can help improve blackhead-prone skin by exfoliating the pores and promoting cell turnover.
- Laser and Light Therapies: Laser and light-based therapies, such as laser resurfacing, photodynamic therapy, and intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy, can help to target and reduce blackheads by shrinking the sebaceous glands, destroying acne-causing bacteria, and promoting collagen production.
- Microdermabrasion: One of the oldest methods done to remove the dirt and debris on the skin by aluminium crystals and diamond tip. It causes microtears in the skin, hence not done very commonly.
