Understanding the Link Between Hair Loss & PCOS: Causes, Symptoms, and Management

Hair Loss & PCOS

Hair loss is a common concern for many individuals, affecting both men and women. However, for women dealing with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), hair loss can be an even more distressing symptom.

PCOS is a hormonal disorder characterized by irregular periods, cysts on the ovaries, and elevated levels of androgens (male hormones) in women.  Major key factor contributing to hair loss, hormonal acne, excessive facial hair in PCOS is due to elevated levels of androgens, such as testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). These hormones can shrink hair follicles, leading to a condition known as androgenic alopecia or female pattern hair loss

Among its various manifestations, hair loss stands out as a significant issue affecting self-esteem and quality of life. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the relationship between hair loss and PCOS, exploring its causes, symptoms, and management strategies.

Causes of Hair Loss in PCOS:

Hormonal Imbalance:

PCOS disrupts the normal production and balance of hormones in the body, leading to an excess of androgens. This hormonal imbalance can trigger hair loss by shortening the hair growth cycle and causing miniaturization of hair follicles.

Insulin Resistance:

Many women with PCOS also experience insulin resistance, where their cells become less responsive to the effects of insulin. Insulin resistance can lead to elevated insulin levels, which in turn can stimulate the production of androgens, exacerbating hair loss.

Inflammation:

Chronic low-grade inflammation is common in PCOS and may contribute to hair loss by interfering with the normal hair growth cycle and causing damage to hair follicles.

Symptoms of Hair Loss in PCOS:

Thinning Hair: Women with PCOS may notice a gradual thinning of their hair, particularly on the crown of the head.

Receding Hairline: Hair loss in PCOS can also manifest as a receding hairline, similar to male pattern baldness.

Excessive Shedding: Increased shedding of hair during washing or brushing may occur in women with PCOS.

Visible Scalp: As hair loss progresses, the scalp may become more visible, especially in areas where hair is sparse.

Changes in Hair Texture: Some women with PCOS may experience changes in the texture of their hair, such as increased coarseness or brittleness.

Treatment Approach:

When it comes to treating PCOS-related hair loss, the approach often involves addressing the underlying hormonal imbalance and promoting healthy hair growth.  Here is a step by step management of analysis and diagnosis of PCOS related hairloss.

Diagnosis:  Consulted Dermatologist might recommend a few tests to check if you are suffering from PCOS related hair loss. To proceed with, few blood tests, hormone tests and an ultrasound examination are suggested.

Treatment: The overall treatment consists of two stages. Firstly, they may prescribe certain oral medications to regulate the androgen levels in the body, alongside topical solutions. In addition to that the next step, the doctor will try to restore your lost hairline with dermatological treatments.

Hormonal Therapy:

Oral Contraceptives: Birth control pills containing estrogen and progestin can help regulate menstrual cycles and reduce androgen levels in women with PCOS. This can help improve hair loss by balancing hormone levels.

Anti-androgen Medications: Drugs such as spironolactone and finasteride can block the effects of androgens on hair follicles, helping to prevent further hair loss and promote hair regrowth.

Topical Treatments: Minoxidil (Rogaine): Minoxidil is a topical medication available over the counter that is applied directly to the scalp. It helps stimulate hair follicles, prolong the hair growth phase, and promote thicker hair growth. Regular use may be necessary to maintain results.

Topical Anti-androgens: Some topical formulations containing anti-androgen medications may be prescribed by dermatologists to target hair loss directly at the scalp.

Topical Peptide serums: Peptide Serums are given as an adjuvant or singly sometimes depending on the grade of damage.

Nutritional Supplements:

Biotin:  Biotin is an essential vitamin for healthy hair growth. Supplementing with biotin may help strengthen hair and promote growth. However, evidence supporting its effectiveness in treating hair loss is limited.

Iron: Iron deficiency is common in women with PCOS and can contribute to hair loss. Supplementing with iron may help improve hair health, especially for those with iron deficiency anemia.

Zinc: Zinc helps in hair growth and repair. Supplementing with zinc may support hair health and reduce hair loss, particularly in individuals with zinc deficiency.

Professional Treatments:

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy/ GFC/PRF:  PRP therapy involves injecting platelet-rich plasma derived from the patient’s own blood into the scalp. This can help stimulate hair growth by promoting tissue repair and regeneration.

In this procedure, doctors use an autologous blood sample drawn from the patient’s arm and process it in the centrifuge machine to separate the plasma and boost its growth factors using the double spin method. Your trichologist will activate this platelet-rich plasma and then administer it into your scalp with the help of microneedles. PRP Hair Treatment stimulates the hair follicles and helps in hair regeneration.

Laser Therapy: Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) devices, such as laser combs or helmets, may help improve hair density and thickness by stimulating hair follicles and increasing blood flow to the scalp.

Hair Restart: Laser Hair Restart with Erbium Yag Laser multiple passes are made on the scalp which stimulates the hair follicle and hence promotes hair growth.

QR678 and Qr678neo:

A recombinant formulation, consisting of a combination of growth factors, called the QR 678 hair growth factor formulation. The formulation is injected in the intradermal layer of the skin of the scalp and may prevent hair loss and stimulate hair growth & is well tolerated.

Other Surgical options Include: Hair Transplantation, Follicular Unit of Hair Transplantation, Follicular Unit Extraction based on the severity.

It’s important to note that the effectiveness of these treatments can vary depending on individual factors such as the severity of hair loss, underlying health conditions, and hormonal imbalances.

Lifestyle Modifications:

Besides the above-mentioned clinical approaches, here are some tips that you can be followed to control PCOS hair loss.
