    Post inflammatory pigmentation also know as PIH and hyperpigmentation caused due to damage or irritation of the skin. Hyperpigmentation can effect face as well as body.

    Skin effected with hyper pigmentation turns brown or black depending on the skin tone and depth of discolouration . Hyperpigmentation is common in both men and women. Root cause of PIH is increased melanin production. Melanin is the pigment that defines colour of the skin , increase in melanin after inflammation or injury is due to the heeling process of the skin . People with darker skin tones have more pigment ( melanin) so there is more chance of PIH issues for skin of colour.

    Certain skin problems like acne , burns , eczema , allergic reactions , infections , insect bites , lichen Planus , pseudofolliculitis barbae and psoriasis.

    Treatment

    Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation can take long time to fully clear . PIH can be epidermal ( top layer of the skin ) or dermal ( deep layer of the skin )
    PIH Epidermal can be treated with tropical creams / regimens such as: Topical hydroquinone , Retinoid , Corticosteroids , Azelaic acid , Glycolic acis , Kojic acid alone with Dermatological procedures like Microdermabrasion and light chemical peels.
    Dermal PIH is more difficult to treat and may require aggressive Dermatological treatments such as Chemical peels to laser surgery.
    Sun light can worsen PIH so its important to use sun protection creams on the areas exposed to sunlight.
