Hair Coloring Tips

The use of a hair dye to just cover up grey hair has changed to fashion-conscious men and women using it for cosmetic appeal. While coloring your hair is a common beauty treatment, the process can lead to long-term problems like dry, brittle hair etc. that cannot be ignored. You should be aware of the permanent damage of the hair caused by the repeated and extensive use of such products. We will be shedding light on what happens when you dye your hair, the common chemicals used in hair dyes, and the side effects caused by hair coloring.

Precautions To Be Taken Before Applying Hair Color.

Do a test before using store-bought hair color. Follow manufacturer’s instructions. If you develop any rash or redness, swelling, burning, or itching, that means you are having an allergic reaction to the dye. Do not dye your hair and consult the best dermatologist for further advice.

Common ingredients in hair dye include hydrogen peroxide and ammonia, which are bleaching agents. These chemicals can weaken your hair shafts, leading to breakage, leading to hair fall in both Peroxides removing pigments from your natural hair and produces blonde color.

Protect your hair from the sun. The hot sun can make your hair weak, dry, rough, faded, and brittle. This is especially true if you dye or bleach your hair. Wear a wide-brimmed hat when you go outside or use an umbrella.

Difference Between Semi-permanent, Demi-permanent, and Permanent Hair Dye.

Basically, there are three types of hair dyes which are semi-permanent, demi-permanent, and permanent hair dyes.

Semi-Permanent Hair Color does not contain peroxide, therefore it can make the hair darker and not lighter. The color lasts about six to twelve shampoos because it only deposits the hair color on the outermost layer of the hair without affecting the hair follicles. Therefore, they are considered safer in comparison to other types of dyes. This is a good choice to try if you are afraid of the outcome of the color.

Demi-Permanent Hair Color contains low amounts of peroxide which can lighten the hair slightly. Demi-permanent deposits the color between the cuticle and cortex, therefore, making it last longer than semi-permanent dye, anywhere from 12 – 26 washes.

Permanent Hair Color as the name suggests will last until the colored strands grow out. Permanent hair color can lighten hair up to 4 shades and cause damage to the hair as peroxide levels are higher.

Side Effects of Hair Dyes

Hair dyes have always been in use despite the shift in trends related to beauty and fashion. However, there are side effects of hair color.

Best Hair Loss Treatment

Here’s the bottom line:  Before choosing the hair color

  • Semi-permanent dyes are more gentle.
  • Consider choosing a dye that is darker rather than lighter compared to your natural hair color to minimize hair damage.
  • If you want a lighter shade, select a dye within three shades of your natural color as more lightening requires higher volumes of peroxide, which is harmful to the hair.
