Facts to know about Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) in Hair Restoration Surgery

FUT Hair Transplant

You’ve probably noticed some degree of hair loss and slower hair growth, as you get older. Both men and women may experience this. While some people aren’t concerned about hair loss, others wish to improve it.

If you want to restore your hair and you are looking for surgical options, Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is a great option.  FUT is one of the best ways to restore your hair for a younger appearance.

What’s involved with a FUT

During FUT, your hair transplant surgeon makes an incision like a strip around 1-1.5 cms on the back of your head, removing hair follicles to be transplanted in the area you’re balding. The incisions are closed with sutures.

It is an outpatient procedure and takes about 4-8 hours to be completed.

Does FUT hurts?

Local anesthesia is administered and possibly a sedative to help keep you comfortable during your procedure. In the days after your procedure, you may experience some tenderness and tightness from the incision. You will be provided with a post-operative kit and instructions on how to alleviate discomfort and promote healthy healing.

Hair Transplant Results

While the results of FUT aren’t immediate, it’s worth the wait. The newly transplanted hair takes several months to start growing.

Most of them start to see thicker, fuller hair around six months with maximum results at a year.

FUT vs FUE

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) are two of the leading hair transplant surgeries.

  • While FUE is good for the early stages of balding, FUT is better for moderate to severe hair loss.
  • No shaving of the donor area is required with FUT, whereas FUE requires shaving.
  • FUT is a shorter procedure compared to FUE.

Advantages of FUT Hair Transplant

  1. It is more accurate- damage to hairs is less as there is dissection under the microscope.
  2. It doesn’t require the donor area to be trimmed
  3. It leaves the rest of the scalp untouched for future sessions.

Disadvantages of FUT hair transplant

  1. It requires a stitch on the back of the head which is present for 2 weeks.
  2. More painful than FUE.
  3. It leaves a linear scar that can be visible if the head is shaved fully.
  4. Not suitable for a small number of grafts.
  5. Body hair transplantation is not possible.
